When Joelle Hingley (né Goodwin) sadly passed away earlier this year her family made the decision to honour her memory by raising funds for East London Dance.

A passionate advocate for dance, Joelle was dedicated to engaging young people in every aspect of dance activity. Between 2000-2005 Joelle taught at Brampton Manor Academy in Newham as Head of Dance and worked with East London Dance on a range of youth dance projects including running a boys’ breakdance group and participating in performance opportunities as part of Newham Arts Network.

“Joelle was a fabulous and committed dance teacher who always leapt at every opportunity to give her pupils a chance to participate in dance projects of all kinds; individuals such as Joelle were, and continue to be, vital partners in the successful delivery of our work at East London Dance.”
Kiki Gale, former Artistic Director and Chief Executive, East London Dance

In 2005 Joelle moved to Cornwall and continued supporting young people in dance. To celebrate Joelle’s passion, her family requested donations in lieu of flowers towards two charities including East London Dance. This inspired Joelle’s two young children to organise a dance-a-thon at their pre-school Sir Robert Geffery’s, in total raising £1,906.09 in her memory.

East London Dance have been able to use this generous gift to support the East London Youth Dance Company, a free initiative for local young people led by professional dance artist Jasmin Saulo. The company allows its members to train and then represent east London at a series of high profile performance events throughout the year. The company also runs free weekly dance technique training sessions that are open to non-company members, aged 13-17.

“We are extremely grateful to Joelle’s family for choosing to donate to East London Dance. East London Youth Dance Company provides opportunities for young people to develop their confidence and skills in dance, which we hope is a fitting legacy to the work that Joelle was so passionate about.”
Polly Risbidger, Director, East London Dance

“Joelle passionately believed in the transformative power of dance, and would be delighted to know that she has been able to support this great initiative helping young dancers from east London – an area that remained very special to her.”
Joelle’s husband, Jason Hingley
