IDENTITY – A celebration of east London’s eclectic dance and fashion cultures

From Thursday 12 to Saturday 14 April, East London Dance welcomed audiences into a world of grit and glamour at Shoreditch Town Hall as dance and catwalk collided in a pulsating gig-like atmosphere in the building’s majestic Victorian Assembly Hall.

“A dazzling clash of fashion, dance and music, the work showcases early career artists who use their skill and lived experiences to expose identity from multiple perspectives.” Josephine Leask, Dance Tabs

Produced by East London Dance and directed by Tony Adigun, IDENTITY brought together Avant Garde Dance Company; Ffion Campbell-Davies & Julia Cheng of House of Absolute; Houston Dance Collective and Rugged Estate in collaboration with fashion stylist Sabrina Henry to infuse hip hop, breaking, voguing, krump, waacking and contemporary dance with their own unique styles to challenge identity stereotypes.

“These artists brought their commitment and extraordinary physical dexterity to Shoreditch, and offered us their emotion and personality at the same time, as only the best dancers can.” Barbara Newman, Dancing Times.

With a vital display of the raw power of dance, fuelled by the style and eclecticism of east London, the three-day run bowed out on an absolute high with the performers and sold-out Saturday night audience raising the roof with incredible energy.

“IDENTITY reflects East London Dance’s vision of and commitment to producing fresh, dynamic, cross-cultural themed work that resonates with London’s vital eclecticism. I hope we see more.” Josephine Leask, Dance Tabs
