AMBITIOUS FOR DANCE
We produce a wide range of dance activities for people of all ages. Including anything from staging performances and large scale events to running workshops and classes, teaching in schools, providing training for teachers, and professional development for artists.
Join in, watch, perform, create, learn, progress, have fun!
Our key values:
• Reflecting and celebrating the diversity and internationalism of our East London communities
• Encouraging access to dance for all, regardless of ability or age
• Promoting the value of dance in developing healthy and cohesive communities
• A commitment to excellence across the full spectrum of our work
Step through our history
East London Dance was established in 1987 as a sub-regional dance council, responsible for developing dance opportunities across outer East London.
1996 saw us reconstitute as a regional dance development agency, a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity.
In 2001 we became a resident core partner of the lottery-funded Stratford Circus Arts Centre. Right in the heart of the Stratford Cultural Quarter, we’re situated next to the Theatre Royal Stratford East and the Stratford Picture House. We’ve become part of a strong team at Stratford Circus. Working alongside Circus Media, NewCEYS (Newham Community Education and Youth Service), NewVIc (Newham Sixth Form College), Theatre Venture, University of East London and Urban Development, to develop an accessible and vibrant East London venue that’s fast emerging as a creative cultural flagship.
In 2006 East London Dance established the London Thames Gateway Dance Partnership (LTGDP). This group positions dance at the forefront of social and urban regeneration in the London Gateway, and promotes partnership working across East London. Learn more about LTGDP
A vibrant backdrop
East London is one of the most culturally diverse regions in Britain, with 200 different language communities. A hive of artistic activity, it has the highest concentration of artists in the whole of London.
In response to this thriving artistic scene, we’ve been building the skills and confidence of East London’s communities through dance since the late 80s; championing East Londoners to the wider world.
Moving forward
The future presents incredible opportunities for us to grow and develop dance within East London and beyond.
Our base at Stratford Circus is just metres away from the site of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We believe that dance can play a central role in the Cultural Olympiad, and strive to make this happen.
As dance continues to gain popularity – for example, over the last few years there’s been an 83 per cent growth in students who choose to study GCSE dance, a third of whom are boys* – East London Dance will remain at its forefront, ambitiously implementing our mission and key values.
