About

Formed by Tony Adigun in 2001 as a creative release from the world of commercial dance he inhabited at the time, Avant Garde Dance brought together a group of like-minded dancers to explore more unusual, abstract and artistic ideas away from the mainstream.

Tony is currently a Work Place Artist at The Place and is being mentored by Akram Khan. He is also Creative Director for Sky One’s ‘Got To Dance and was the recipient of the BEFFTA Award for Best Choreographer in 2011 and 2012.

Future Plans

Avant Garde Dance’s priorities for the next few years:
• Work towards a new full-length production
• Develop more international connections and touring opportunities
• Spread the Avant Garde Dance movement vocabulary with new commissions, creative residencies and working with youth companies/CAT schemes
• Grow the business to be present in fashion, film-making, music, photography, design and indoor/outdoor productions

Current Projects

The Black Album
Open up the sleeve of The Black Album to find a line-up of effortlessly stylish dance. A triple-bill in which three distinctly different hip hop choreographies are woven together like a concept album. Taking you on a soulful journey through the many shades of black. Using innovative cutting-edge dance, you will experience a new way to watch music and a new way to listen to dance.

Romeo & Juliet
Avant Garde Dance’s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet is an immersive hip hop theatre piece that moves across a number of indoor and outdoor locations. The show has dance and musicality at its heart, but is rooted as a theatre production based on Shakespeare’s tragic love story. Tony Adigun’s ground breaking choreography and direction combines with Shakespeare’s text, adapted by spoken word artist and theatre maker Maxwell Golden, to create a stunning production that immerses the audience in a modern take of the play that literally uses the cityscape as the stage.

Collabo
This annual festival invites the UK’s finest hip hop choreographers and performers to collaborate and create innovative dance hybrids or to provide dance interpretations of music produced by Mikey J Asante. Born through Adigun’s drive to bring together companies from different dance worlds and to create greater union in the UK’s hip-hop dance scene. This kind of collaboration leads choreographers down creative paths they would never normally have considered and results in some inspiring work.

Education

Avant Garde Dance delivers powerful transformative education work, challenging people to go against the grain and channel their unique identities. From work in schools, to universities, community dance projects with older people to professional development, Avant Garde Dance aims to get the best out of people and can create bespoke education or participation programmes to suit the needs of the recipient. The company currently delivers youth classes, one off workshops, creative residencies, professional masterclasses, intensives and post show talks as part of their artistic programme.

Tony is committed to supporting the next generation of dancers and choreographers and has his own youth company called Avant Garde Youth (aged 11-21). Hosting annual auditions the best youth dancers are selected from across London, and selected members come together once a week to train. The youth company have been invited to perform on many London stages and are notorious for being slick, fast paced and musically exhilarating.
